Organizational Strategies

In conjunction with Management Routines, good Organizational Strategies will enhance your lesson, increasing time-on-task and enjoyment for both the student and the teacher.  These strategies will help your lesson to run smoothly.

Teacher/Student Positioning

  • Position yourself (as teacher) in a place which will minimize distractions when giving instruction.
  • Develop spacing (use all space available).
  • Position yourself on the periphery to facilitate observation.
  • Work in small groups to keep all students actively involved and participating in a game or activity.
Equipment Use

  • Have more than one place where children can obtain equipment.
  • Use lots of equipment (appropriately sized) for a high activity ratio.
  • Modify equipment to allow for skill development (i.e.. use beach ball instead of volleyball).
Lesson Structure

  • Allow for transition time between change room and gym.
  • Use games, skill development and extending tasks throughout lesson.
  • Plan your transitions from warm up to skill development to culminating activity.
  • Be prepared to adapt/modify games and activities for differing skill levels.
